New Govt Rules – Starting May 15, the Indian government is rolling out new rules that will affect ration cards, LPG gas connections, and bank account management. These changes are part of a bigger push to go digital, cut down on fraud, and make sure subsidies and benefits only go to people who genuinely qualify.
Ration Card Rules Are Going Digital
If you use a ration card, there are a few things you’ll need to update. The government is moving everything online to make the Public Distribution System more transparent. From May 15, it’s mandatory to link your Aadhaar card, complete e-KYC, and go through biometric verification to keep receiving your ration benefits. Also, there will now be yearly checks to make sure your ration card stays active.
The income limit to qualify for a ration card has also been updated. For rural areas, the cap is set at 1.2 lakh rupees per year. In cities, it’s 1.5 lakh, and in metro areas, it’s been raised to 1.8 lakh. There are also special allowances for widows, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

One major update is that the “One Nation One Ration Card” scheme is now fully enforced. This means you can collect your ration from anywhere in the country—perfect for people who move around for work, especially migrant workers.
New Gas Cylinder Rules and Subsidy Updates
If you use an LPG connection, there are new rules about subsidies and how many cylinders you can book. For BPL families, the subsidy is set at 300 rupees per cylinder, while middle-income households earning under 8 lakh a year will get 200 rupees off. Families earning over 10 lakh a year won’t receive any subsidy at all.
You’ll only be allowed to book two cylinders a month and up to 15 cylinders a year under the subsidy plan. And from now on, you’ll need to verify deliveries using an OTP sent to your phone. KYC is also compulsory for all LPG users. Make sure your bank account is linked so that you continue to receive the subsidy directly.
Another exciting update is the introduction of smart gas cylinders. These will come with tracking chips, leak detection, and even features that monitor your gas usage. The rollout starts in cities, but semi-urban and rural areas are expected to receive them by the end of the year.
Banks Are Changing Some Key Rules Too
From May 15, all bank accounts must be Aadhaar-linked, and you must update your mobile number as well. If your account is over three years old, you’ll also need to verify your address. Adding a nominee is now mandatory for all account holders. Depending on your account’s risk category, banks may also ask you to refresh your KYC details.
The RBI has updated the minimum balance requirements too. For savings accounts in urban branches, you’ll need to maintain at least 2,000 rupees. It’s 1,000 for semi-urban and 500 for rural areas. Basic savings accounts and salary accounts are not affected.
There’s also a push for digital banking. UPI limits have been increased to 5 lakh rupees for verified users, and NEFT or RTGS charges have been reduced. Banks are encouraging everyone to sign up for mobile banking, and you might need to perform at least one digital transaction a year to keep some account features active.
Who’s Affected and What Should You Do?
These new rules will affect almost everyone—from BPL families to middle-income earners, senior citizens, and even students.
- If you have a ration card, get your Aadhaar linked and complete e-KYC right away.
- If you use LPG, make sure your mobile number and bank details are updated.
- For bank accounts, double-check your KYC, nominee details, and mobile number.
For people living in rural areas or those who aren’t familiar with digital services, help will be available. The government is setting up mobile camps, help desks, and even keeping banks and gas agencies open longer during this transition period.
